It started off with an idea…

In early November of 2023, four friends sat in a dining room after watching the New York Knicks’ loss to the Milwaukee Bucks. Eating pizza settling into coolness, we picked apart the game, complaining about missed shots and questionable coaching calls.

The conversation gradually drifted from the game to school projects, from team strategy to weather. What did a sixty percent chance of rain even mean? Why could we recite RJ Barrett’s true shooting percentage but not our own grades? We found ourselves circling back to the same idea: the numbers were everywhere, but they needed a voice.

That idea grew…

But we were just four high school sophomores. How would we even make a difference? We felt powerless, but motivated. We realized that the only way to get somewhere was to take a single step.

So we started small, forming a club that met in empty classrooms. It was just friends at first, but gradually, we expanded. We had members, but not enough activities. That’s when we started Sure Statistics. It was the perfect bridge between the school club and the community service aspect we wanted. Soon, we were doing projects using recorded data from AAU basketball games, winning forecasting tournaments, and teaching in Harlem. The idea was growing.

Now…

Now, nearly two years later, Sure Statistics has grown into a place more unique than we could have imagined. We’re no longer just four sophomores with an idea; we’re a growing community helping students from all backgrounds discover that statistics belongs to everyone. But throughout our entire journey, we’ve kept the idea from that first night central: we are the medium through which numbers speak. Yes, the Knicks might have lost, but we gained so much more.
